Around 50 automobiles have been covered with what appears to be human blood in the Germany's city of Hanau in proximity to Frankfurt, according to police.
Cars, building surfaces and mailboxes were marked, in some cases with Nazi symbols, they announced in a release.
Law enforcement state they were contacted in the late hours on Wednesday, when a man discovered that a car in the Lamboy district of Hanau had been smeared with a reddish-hued fluid.
The liquid had been drawn in the shape of a swastika, they reported.
Officers then located many other smeared cars and building exteriors in the nearby vicinity.
Nazi symbols are banned in Germany under laws prohibiting the public display of Nazi symbols.
Police report early analysis show the liquid was likely human blood.
"Currently there is no clue as to where it came from; authorities are not yet informed of any harm in connection with the incident," they stated.
City officials announced they were working "to unravel the mystery" and have asked to the public for details.
A senior political figure stated the attack rendered him stunned and had to be solved quickly.
"This event affects the core of Hanau and reawakens the wounds of the far-right attack in 2020," he stated on social media, recalling the killing of nine victims by a gunman focusing on residents of foreign heritage in 2020.
